We at Little Manila Rising mourn and are angered at the cold-blooded murder of George Floyd. With this tipping point, we are also still mournful and angered at all of the Black lives taken throughout recent and past American history due to racism.
We add our voice to the many who have offered condolences to the Floyd family, his friends, and his community. And we demand real justice to be served to all of the police officers involved.
Frankly though, that isn’t enough.
There is a long list of racial inequity injustices that needs to be addressed for true healing in our nation. Police brutality, mass incarceration, educational inequity, shorter average lifespans depending on the neighborhood you live in, voter suppression, white supremacy, historical and ongoing colonization, centuries of slavery, to name a few.
This is what we commit to:
We commit to never give up on the long and short term solutions for racial equity. We commit to continued solidarity with likeminded groups who seek healing from racial inequity. We commit to fighting anti-Black sentiment in the Filipino community. We commit to our young people and encourage them to continue their ancestors’ fight for social justice. We commit to standing in allyship with marginalized communities.
We stand in awe at the resilience of the Black community and are grateful for their role as trailblazers for social justice now and throughout America’s history.
And we know that…
BLACK LIVES MATTER.
